Summary

  • Lewis Hsu, MD, PhD, is a pediatric hematologist with a career devoted to sickle cell disease, both clinical and translational research. Hsu developed a lifelong affinity for interdisciplinary collaboration during his education in Chemical Engineering and the combined MD-PhD (Biophysics). He has served in leadership of some of the largest pediatric sickle cell centers in the USA. His clinical and translational research in sickle cell disease includes the landmark STOP study of transfusion to reduce stroke risk in sickle cell, landmark studies of bone marrow transplantation to cure sickle cell disease, clinical research on pain management of patients hospitalized with sickle cell pain, and studies of inflammatory vasculopathy due to hemolysis in mouse models. During 25 years of experience in leadership of some of the largest sickle cell programs in the country, his immersion in “team science” led to over 70 scientific publications. His research in sickle cell disease also includes community health workers, implementation science, health education, and global community engagement. He co-authored the “Hope and Destiny” books for family education on sickle cell and provides training for community health workers for sickle cell disease with Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) and with a pilot project in Nigeria, and the training of Linkage Specialists can build upon this foundation. His experience in applying implementation science to sickle cell disease includes formal training from NIH TIDIRC program and applications to sickle cell disease in NIH sickle cell projects and by the European Union for sickle cell in Africa. He had leadership roles on care transitions, social determinants of health, and patient-centered outcomes in PCORI work and in the CHECK project under Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Innovation. His community engagement and volunteer service includes Chief Medical Officer of SCDAA and global experience in Nigeria and Brazil.
